The University of Montana-Missoula welcomes you to our online learning environment. Our innovative online classes are designed to help busy students meet their educational requirements at a convenient time and place. Through instructional design, technology, and support for students and faculty, our online courses provide access to a quality education that is convenient, flexible and personalized to meet the individual needs of the learner.

Our online classes enable students to pursue studies from practically anywhere. Courses are offered every semester (Fall, Spring and Summer) using the Blackboard courseware system. Email, chat rooms and forums, bulletin boards and other technologies enable dialogue with faculty, advisors, fellow students and others. Our dedicated staff are online education professionals who are committed to your success.

Our website at http://umonline.umt.edu has more information and a full listing of courses available.

For information on the exciting new Alternative Energy Course that will be offered Online beginning spring semester 2006 please take a look at the flyer (PDF file).

How does an online course work?

Courses start at fixed times and end at fixed times, usually based on the semester. Check with each instructor for course requirements - there may be specific times when students may be expected to participate in online discussions or take exams, for example. The syllabus for each online course is available on the Online Website. Access to online courses is through the Blackboard system. Online students are automatically assigned an email address and may learn about Blackboard through a Blackboard tutorial online, by viewing the Blackboard Student Manual, or by attending on-campus Blackboard orientations.

Are you ready for an online course?

A quick assessment on the website will help you decide! This will not provide any assurance of success, but it offers some additional information about the traits that tend to make one a successful online learner.

What does an online course cost?

Online courses are assessed with an additional $48/credit online learning fee.  Basic courses charges are based on your student status (College of Technology, Lower Division or Upper Division Undergraduate, Graduate, Post Baccalaureate, Resident, or Non Resident), the number of credits you are taking, and whether you are only taking online courses.  If you are only taking online courses in any semester, you may contact Admissions 406-243-7882 and change your status to be a Distance student.  Distance students do not pay on campus fees, which is a considerable savings, do not require immunization records, and may not elect student insurance.  See fee tables for details on charges at:  http://www.umt.edu/bussrvcs/studacctserv.htm.

How to Register

Can I receive my degree completely online?

Are there Noncredit courses available Online?

Ed2Go is a web based online learning center offering non-credit courses at reasonable rates (usually about $79). No enrollment to UM or COT is required. There are over 300 courses to choose from covering a wide range of topics. Courses start at the beginning of each month and last for six weeks. No special software is required for most classes; all you need is a computer and Internet connection. It's a great way to brush up on some skills or get a thorough introduction to something new!
