Working To Build "Dual-Credit Options" At The COT For High School Students

Monday, Oct 30, 2006 - Thursday, Nov 16, 2006

The article about Dean Barry Good’s focus on the partnership between COT and the public high schools was in UM’s campus newspaper MONTANA KAIMIN on Friday, October 6, 2006.

Barry Good started as dean of The University of Montana’s College of Technology the beginning of July.

From 1978 to 1992, Good was a college faculty member, loss control engineer, and researcher first. Then he served as chairman of the Department of Science at Gaston College in Dallas, NC and the Division of Sciences at Louisiana State College at Eunice. After that, he worked as dean of the Division of Mathematics, Science and Health Sciences at Kilgore College in Texas. From 2000 to 2005, Good was as vice president for learning at North Arkansas College in Harrison, AR. He was also a vice president for academic affairs at West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling, WV from spring 2005 untill he came to the University of Montana’s College of Technology.

One of the new dean’s goals is to find areas where COT can help increase students' success rate in higher education and to better understand employment needs of the state.
“Dual-Credit course offerings” is a new program for students that Good has been working on to built. In this program, high school juniors and seniors would have an opportunity to take classes at COT and count those classes for both high school and college credit.

Dean Good has also been working on the proposal for a COT branch campus in Hamilton. For more information about “the proposal for COT branch campus in Hamilton”, Go to News page.

Montana's Kruse To Ride Broncs Despite Broken Bone

Saturday, Jun 10, 2006 - Sunday, Jun 11, 2006

It appeared for a time that the University of Montana's lone entry into the College National Finals Rodeo was going to have to ride wrong-handed.
But 20-year-old Jesse Kruse, who broke the navicular bone in his left hand last month, feels he can work around a cast and the saddle bronc stock at the CNFR, which runs June 11-17 in Casper, Wyo.
“Actually my hand's feeling really good,” said Kruse, who has a cast running from just behind his left knuckles to an inch or two below his elbow. “Hopefully it works out for me. But if not, if it don't work out on the first horse, I'll switch hands.”
That's what he did after getting bucked off a bronc during the “Bulls and Broncs” portion of the college rodeo in Missoula in mid-May. Looking for another ride and some added money, Kruse caught all of his 145 pounds - spread over a 5-foot-4 frame - with his left hand.
“It (the navicular) broke right in the middle,” he said. “If it goes to one side or the other, you need to have surgery. I got lucky.”
With a berth in the CNFR at stake, Kruse put his right hand under the rope for his final ride.
“(That) Sunday was the short go, and my hand was hurting really bad there,” he said. “I switched hands, I got the horse covered and scored 65. But it felt all goofy. It was like riding my first horse all over again.”
The 65 nailed down third in the Big Sky Region saddle bronc standings. Kruse starts competition in Sunday's first go, though the section he rides in hasn't been posted. He'll ride in the second go's fourth section on Tuesday at the Casper Events Center, and again in section two of the third go on Wednesday.
The Great Falls native is in the welding program at UM's College of Technology. He's been roping since he was a pup, started riding broncs between his sophomore and junior years of high school, and began steer wrestling last summer. He earned all-around cowboy honors at Montana's rodeo, the final of the regular season.
Now comes the CNFR.
“I just hope to cover all three of my horses,” said Kruse, who stopped to ride in a PRCA rodeo in Cody, Wyo., on his way to Casper. “This will be my first trip. I hear it's a good time.”

College Of Technology's Kruse Headed For College Rodeo Finals

Thursday, May 11, 2006 - Saturday, Jun 17, 2006

UM's Kruse (College of Technology Welding Major) headed for college rodeo finals.
Freshman Jesse Kruse will be the lone University of Montana representative at the College National Finals Rodeo in June.
Kruse, from Great Falls, was third in the final Big Sky Region saddle bronc standings behind Jarrett Monroe and James Irish of Montana-Western. The top three individuals and top two teams in each region qualify for the CNFR, to be held June 11-17 in Casper, Wyo.,
Kruse earned all-around cowboy honors in the final rodeo of the season at the Western Montana Fairgrounds in Missoula, despite breaking the navicular bone in his riding hand in the first round. He switched hands for his ride in the finals and made a qualifying ride.
Kruse also finished fifth among team roping heelers. UM's Shawn Smith was fourth among team roping headers, just 10 points out of third place. Billy Hendrickson of Arlee was fifth in saddle bronc. Jessica Milliron of Polson (goat tying) and Lacy Fleharty of Grass Range (barrel racing) were UM's top women. Both placed ninth.
