Application Process

Getting Started

  • Complete The University of Montana College of Technology Application for Admission. You can request this form by calling 406.243.7882 or 800.542.6882 (toll-free in Montana).

  • $30 Application Fee (former enrolled UM students do not need to pay this one time fee).

Submit High School Transcripts or GED Scores

A copy of your high school transcript or a copy of your GED scores is required before registering for classes at the UM COT.

Your transcript can be obtained from your high school. Your GED scores can be obtained from the state’s testing center where you took the test.

Submit Medical History Form and Immunization Records (2 MMR immunizations are required) A copy of your immunization records are required before registering for classes at the UM COT. If you were born in or before 1956, you are not required to submit these records. Your immunization records can often be accessed from your family physician. You immunization records may also be posted to your high school transcript.

Submit All Past College or University Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from all past colleges or universities attended. Contact the registrar's office of that college or university to make this request. Please have them sent directly to:

Transcript Evaluation

If you have attended another college or university and received credit for one or more classes, and you would like to transfer that credit over to the UM COT, a transcript evaluation must be completed. This process cannot officially begin without having all official transcripts in your file at the UM COT. Please call 406.243.7882 for more information.

Assessment / Placement Tests

ACT, SAT, ASSET, or COMPASS Assessment

If you have not taken the ACT, SAT, ASSET, or COMPASS tests within the past three years, you will need to take one of these tests. We offer the COMPASS test free of charge. To schedule an appointment call (406) 243.7826.

According to the Montana Board of Regents, all students must satisfy a writing proficiency standard that is demonstrated with a score from ACT, SAT or MUSWA. Students who do not have one of these scores should take the UM Writing Placement Assessment Exam.

Selection

We have open admissions to all who meet our minimum admissions requirements. Programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Waiting Lists

Because we have an open admissions policy, many of our programs fill up quickly. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to apply early! We have waiting lists for some programs. If you are on a waiting list, you are still welcome to begin work on your general education courses.

Transfer Students

The UM COT welcomes applications from all transfer students. A transcript evaluation is completed for all transfer students upon receipt of all previous college transcripts.

International Students

Applicants from outside the United States are encouraged to apply for admission. There are a few additional factors in this process; therefore, please call 406.243.7828 to make sure all correct steps are taken.
